Santos Hernández is one of the most famous names in Spanish guitar making and is especially known for his flamenco guitars. He first apprenticed in the guitar making workshop of Valentin Viudes, and then briefly with Ortega and Gonzalez. In the mid-1890s, he served in the artillery of the Spanish Army, finally joining the workshop of Manuel Ramírez in the late 1890s as a journeyman. In 1909, he became the foreman of the workshop and is credited with building the famous 1912 guitar that was owned and used by André Segovia for much of his early career. Segovia actually signed inside this guitar in 1936. It is little known that Andres started out as a 'flamenco'!

After Manuel RamÍrez died in 1916, Santos Hernández established his own independent business. Following his death in 1943, his widow continued to run the workshop eventually passing it to her nephew Feliciano Bayón.'

This guitar is fine example for a 94 year old. It is amazingly light and has the original maple golpe. The guitar has such a pretty plantia and rosette. The finish is original save for two top cracks, well repaired in the long distant past. The structure is totally stable as internal pictures show (full set sent upon request). The guitar has a warm old sound but still packs a punch when asked.

The instrument was owned by another famous player, Estaban Sanlucar. The mark on the upper bout is not a crack, rather a chemical reaction to Esteban's chin! A rare, collectable yet very usable guitar.

Comes with original Spanish case in good usable condition.
