Manuel Contreras Double Top (1983)

Manuel Contreras Double Top (1983)

JUST SOLD Manuel Contreras began making guitars in Madrid in 1959. He rapidly became one of the most famous Spanish luthiers by the 1970's and his guitars have been played by many top concert players including the Romero family.

Contreras is now recognised as one of the most progressive of makers, developing new concepts in guitar construction. In 1974 he made his first 'Double Top' guitar and the results are legendary. Of all the many efforts to make a traditional sounding guitar with a vastly bigger sound, this is surely the best. Now an icon of the Madrid school, the guitar works with a second top placed near the back of the guitar vibrating with the upper top. He made the two tops of matching woods, in this case cedar.

These guitars are now collectable, rare and desirable. This one has had the frets re-crowned and the top repaired and this is reflected in the asking price. There are no cracks and the guitar is ready for professional use.

This guitar has one of the best sounds I have ever had the pleasure to play. Perfectly balanced, open and vibrant and the aged woods make for a mature clear tone. It has only had one owner from new.

The guitar will come with a hand made Paxman case in a cover, these cost a small fortune when new!
